What it means to be a human (2024)

In the realm of advanced artificial intelligence, image generators have made remarkable strides in creating uncannily realistic simulations. Hands, in particular, have been replicated with astonishing accuracy, capturing every minute detail, from wrinkles and callouses to scars. However, these models stumble when tasked with generating disabled human limbs, often struggling to comprehend fundamental aspects such as the typical number of fingers or the varying lengths of limbs from different angles. This limitation is exemplified in the creation of realistic yet able-bodied hands, falling short of replicating the physical disabilities that are an inherent part of the human experience. Paradoxically, this failure offers a glimmer of hope, as it highlights AI's current inability to fully grasp the essence of humanity, leaving room for further growth and understanding.

In the vast expanse of the internet, mysterious photographs roam free, shrouded in secrecy. These enigmatic images, often torn from their original contexts, spark a multitude of questions: Who are their rightful owners, and what hidden stories do they conceal? How do those who stumble upon them engage with these visual puzzles, and what happens when a photograph breaks free from its historical anchors? The thought-provoking work, "Portrait of a Lady," delves into the very essence of photography by focusing on a single, anonymous portrait of a woman. Through a mesmerizing 3-minute narrative, the image is reimagined, oscillating between motion and stillness, as the subject 'seduces' the viewer on an uncharted journey, liberated from her past. By stripping the image of its original reference and representation, the work deconstructs the photograph, revealing its autonomy and inviting the viewer to unravel the secrets hidden within.

Mutualism (βιολογική αμοιβαιότητα).2017

In biology, the term mutualism describes a form of symbiosis in which different organisms coexist in a relation ship of mutual benefit. These are dynamic systems of balance in which survival is not based on competition but on interdependence, synchronisation, and adaptation. Mutualism is not a static harmony; it is a continuous negotiation between bodies, rhythms, and environmental conditions.

Posthuman Transition.2017

In a mesmerizing digital transformation, the human body undergoes a profound regeneration, where every detail is systematically erased, leaving behind a being that is both familiar and unrecognizable. The soundtrack serves as a catalyst, marking each incremental change as the human form dissolves, only to re-emerge in a new, post-human iteration. This metamorphosis blurs the lines between human and machine, as the essence of humanity transcends its physical boundaries, yet remains inherently tied to its core identity. Rather than a radical departure, this fusion of human and technical intelligence represents a continuum, where humanity persists, albeit in a redefined state, challenging our understanding of what it means to be human in the face of rapid technological advancement.

Crossing Βorder - becoming European.2016

As they navigate the landscape of the Greek borders, refugees and immigrants are hiding behind trees and bushes as they wait for the perfect moment to evade the vigilant eyes of border guards. With calculated precision, they pack light, layering clothing to avoid the weight of heavy backpacks and the exhaustion that comes with it. Once they've successfully crossed into new territory, they shed their worn attire, retaining only the best pieces in an effort to blend in with the locals and avoid drawing attention from authorities. This deliberate transformation is crucial, as they strive to create a new identity that diverges from the stereotype of the immigrant or refugee, instead embracing the cultural and national context of their adopted country. In this quest for self-reinvention, even the most mundane aspects of appearance – the clothes they wear, the way they carry themselves – become crucial elements in the construction of a new persona, one that seeks to assimilate seamlessly into their unfamiliar surroundings.

Garden of Eden: entering dangerous zone.2018

The concept of the garden has been a recurring motif in Persian literature, representing a sacred space where individuals can undergo profound spiritual transformations. Paradoxically, it also symbolizes exile and independence, highlighting the complexities of human existence. This duality is reminiscent of the biblical Garden of Eden, a paradise described in the book of Genesis as the inaugural home of Adam and Eve. However, the mythological narrative takes a drastic turn, blaming Eve for the original sin and Adam's subsequent fall from grace. Challenging this patriarchal narrative, the video reimagines Eve as a symbol of liberation, boldly ringing the exit bell without hesitation, rather than attempting to deceive or manipulate. By doing so, it offers a refreshing commentary on the traditional myth, one that reclaims Eve's agency and redefines her role in the ancient narrative.
